Seeing with Spirit

Join us for a casual, thoughtful conversation connecting art and spiritual practice.

Each month, a faith, spiritual, or contemplative practitioner joins a High staff member in a conversation centered on a work of art and the ways it invites deeper reflection into their contemplative practice.

Louis A. Ruprecht Jr. is William M. Suttles Chair in Religious Studies and Director of the Center for Hellenic Studies at Georgia State University. His work covers a range of topics, including the appropriation of Greek themes in subsequent historical periods. For over a decade, he has been a Research Fellow at the Vatican Library and the Vatican Secret Archives, where he has researched the Early Modern conception of art as well as the privileging of classical art in Vatican Museums. His books include Winckelmann and the Vatican’s First Profane Museum (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), Policing the State: Democratic Reflections on Police Power Gone Awry, in Memory of Kathryn Johnston (Wipf and Stock, 2013), and Classics at the Dawn of the Museum Era: The Life and Times of Antoine Chrysostome Quatremère de Quincy  (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). He holds a PhD in philosophical and religious ethics, with emphasis on classical literature and philosophy, from Emory’s Graduate Division of Religion.

Ruprecht will discuss William Wetmore Story’s Libyan Sibyl on the Third Level of the Stent Family Wing. Join the conversation at 12:00 and 1:00 p.m.

Soundscapes

Immerse yourself in peaceful sounds as you rediscover our Modern and Contemporary Art galleries.

This month features an ambient sound bath experience by Athens-based musician Thomas Dodd. Since his youth, Dodd has been drawn to creating moods and atmospheres through sound. His most recent project, Galena, combines his love of meditation, metaphysical healing, and music. After experiencing success through online streaming, Dodd is looking forward to connecting with and drawing inspiration from people in the Atlanta community.

Sessions will begin in the Modern and Contemporary Art Skyway galleries at 11:20 a.m., 12:20 p.m., and 1:20 p.m.

just add honey

just add honey is an Atlanta-based small business that offers blended loose-leaf teas for all to enjoy. Since 2006, they’ve combined single-origin loose-leaf teas from small-batch farms with local or organic ingredients to make refined flavors. They will be offering a selection of zero-proof teas available for purchase.

People stand in line at an outdoor tea stand with a banner displaying the tea menu, including hot tea, hot tea with CBD, and iced tea. Trees and a red tent are visible in the background. One man pays at the counter as others wait to place their orders.

Labyrinth

This labyrinth, designed by artist Steven L. Anderson, may look like a maze, but it is not meant to confuse or frustrate you. The labyrinth is a nearly 4,000-year-old design that has been found in a variety of forms and cultures. We invite you to use this labyrinth for walking meditation and contemplation.

Community Spotlight

Each month, the High’s Learning and Civic Engagement department partners with and shines a spotlight on community organizations, initiatives, and individuals that support our directive to extend creativity and civic connection across Atlanta. This month, we are highlighting the role of teachers in our communities.

Metro Atlanta features over 6,900 certified personnel dedicated to the education of the city’s youth. The High thanks teachers for their commitment to students and arts learning. Our gratitude is especially represented today, March 15, on our Teacher Appreciation Day, as we encourage educators to recharge their practice.

Please visit high.org/educators for events and resources specifically created for educators.
